Hotels & Accommodation in The Rocks
Full of atmosphere and history dating back to convict times, The Rocks is an intriguing maze of sandstone lanes, courtyards and 19th century warehouses and terraces now converted into fine restaurants, boutiques and galleries. With views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and close proximity to Sydney Harbour, Circular Quay and the CBD, The Rocks is a must visit.
Considered the oldest part of the city, The Rocks was once home to Sydney's dockworkers and peasants. It still features many original buildings made of local sandstone, from which the area takes its name. The perfect way to explore the district is on a Rocks Walking Tour. Or if you're feeling brave, join a Rocks Ghost Tour to hear spine-chilling tales of murder and hauntings. Alternatively, walk along the harbour from Circular Quay to below the Harbour Bridge, hop on a cruise from the boat terminal, or climb the Harbour Bridge itself for an unforgettable experience.
Discover numerous historical sites including the Sydney Observatory and the Dawes Point Battery, the first fortified position in New South Wales. There's also a superb variety of museums, such as those inside the 19th century Cadmans Cottage and Colonial House Museum. Visit the Susannah Place Museum for a fascinating insight into the lives of the working class from the 19th century onwards, or see what the area was like prior to the 20th century at The Rocks Discovery Museum.
The Argyle Terraces on Playfair Street now house excellent shops, galleries and retail spaces within their heritage exteriors. Pick up unique items including designer clothing, souvenirs, jewellery, crafts and handmade chocolates. Or browse the weekend Rocks Market for quality local handicrafts, foodstuffs, gifts, toys and more. Wander the many art galleries, including the Art Deco-style Museum of Contemporary Art. Its extensive collections of works by local and foreign artists provide hours of fun and learning for the whole family, and there's also a great souvenir shop and cafe.
The Rocks boasts some of Sydney's finest restaurants, including Rockpool, Aria, Bel Mondo, Cruise, Wildfire and Yoshii's, in addition to laidback cafes and historic pubs, many thought to be Sydney's oldest. Meanwhile, The Rocks Centre offers al fresco dining alongside superb shopping and live entertainment, and The Rocks Square regularly holds various performances.
Each year The Rocks hosts a series of interesting events, including The Rocks Aroma Festival, when coffee producers, drinkers, and equipment manufacturers from around the world celebrate their love of the brew along with shows and live entertainment. The Rocks is also the focus of Sydney's Australia Day celebrations on January 26.
