About Adelaide
The neat, flat city of Adelaide was planned before it was settled, hence the city is an easy to follow series of grids. Resting on the coastal plain between Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges, the city has two clearly defined centres, Adelaide Central and Adelaide North.
Renowned as the ‘City of Churches’, it could be argued that the title refers more to the serenity of the city, rather than the religious institutions. Adelaide retains a country town feel, with clean, wide streets and a sense of space - and a lack of traffic problems, common place in Australia’s eastern cousins.
Visitors can explore dozens of interesting historic buildings in the city centre, the famous shopping mecca that is Rundle Mall, and experience Hindley Street after dark – Adelaide’s answer to King’s Cross. Renowned as the city of festivals – there’s always something happening in Adelaide.
The mediterranean climate means that the city is ideally suited for outdoor living, and the majority of developments echo this. Enjoy open air malls and parks, following the course of the Torrens River through the city. The Adelaide Festival Centre, centrally located on the banks of the river, boasts a number of theatres and attracts international artists.
Embark on a discovery of the world's cuisine in Gouger Street, Adelaide's premier dining precinct. Taste the flavours of traditional Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian and Japanese, Asian fusion, noodle bars, regional Chinese and yum cha, French and Argentine cuisine, and a number of first-rate seafood restaurants.
The suburbs of Adelaide stretch into the famous wine growing areas of McLaren Vale to the south, to Elizabeth in the north and into the Adelaide Hills in the north.
