Australia’s Capital City, Canberra, is the country’s largest inland city, with a population of around 350,000. Born out of rivalry between the opposing cities of Sydney and Melbourne, Canberra is centred around the beautiful Lake Burley Griffin, and offers a gateway to a world of historic towns, sites, with an abundance of natural attractions in close proximity.
Canberra sits strategically in the Australian Capital Territory south-west of Sydney and north-east of Melbourne, placing it just a couple of hours from breathtaking coastline that boast some of Australia’s most pristine beaches. Surrounded by vast National Park, there is every opportunity to get out and enjoy nature, from bushwalking, picnicking, camping, to wildlife watching.
Visitors to Canberra cannot miss driving the loop to reach the Snowy Mountains which passes through the historic towns of Bredbo, Cooma, Berridale, Jindabyne, Thredbo, Khancoban, Tumbarumba, Batlow, Tumut and Adaminaby. Those with a taste for adventure can take their pick from snowboarding, skiing, caving, abseiling and much more!
There is ample accommodation to choose from throughout the city, and visitors to Canberra have every reason to extend their stay from business to leisure. The Canberra International and Domestic Airport is only 15 minutes from the CBD, with leading hotels placed only minutes from a collection of restaurants, cafes, shops and key attractions.
The country's political hub, Canberra is home to Parliament House and the High Court, and is populated by many government departments and agencies, featuring an extensive collection of museums and organisations that play a significant role in preserving Australia’s cultural heritage.
Following Federation in 1901, The Australian Capital Territory was officially declared in 1911, and submissions were accepted for the city’s design. Chicago Architect Walter Burley Griffin was chosen as the winner of this world-wide competition, and his designs have dictated much of Canberra’s geographical layout, tree-lined streets, formal parks, gardens and water features, designed to compliment the city's natural attractions.
Breaking News about Canberra Accommodation
Surfers Hawaiian Apartments: Wonderful Time - Surfers Hawaiian is in a great location, close to everything and easy to find. The room was great, had fantastic view and all the amenities you need. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
Aruba Surf Resort: Aruba Surf Resort - We liked the proximity to Broadbeach town centre as well as the beach. The rates were fantastic and so close to everything. We found the 1 bedroom apartment suited us well, it was well appointed and well maintained. Air-con was great as a back up although we didn't use it much at all even though it was humid. The pool was great as well as a great maintained garden area. A great value for money holiday in a great setting. From our point of view, Aruba Surf Resort was the best presented of the 3 Aruba resorts near us , from the outside anyway. Stuart & Denise were very accommodating too.
Palm Royale Cairns: A very nice experience - The room overlooked the pool and had the sound of running water all the time which was very relaxing. The room itself was well maintained and very comfortable. The Palm Royale is well located being close to the airport and only 10 minutes from the city centre. I had breakfast by the pool and the food was excellent if a little overpriced.
Berkeley On The Beach: Pleasantly Surprised - Fantastic location both right on top of the beach next to Surf-Lifesaving flags as well as only a few minutes walk to the heart of Surfers. Pool & spa are heated, units much more spacious than a hotel room, and it is generally pretty quiet! Can't ask for much more at a very good price. Will definitely stay here again!
