Welcome to South Yarra
Bordered by the Yarra River in the north, South Yarra is one of Melbourne's most exclusive and vibrant suburbs.
One of the most recognised areas of Melbourne is Chapel Street. This South Yarra precinct is filled with amazing young designers' boutiques, giftware stores and a multicultural flavour. Enjoy the lively atmosphere of the cafes and restaurants here. Chapel Street also features a range of lounge bars and clubs, making it one of the most popular addresses - day and night.
Prahran Market is Australia's oldest continuously running food market, selling quality fruit and vegetables, as well as seafood, meat and flowers. The markets are an ideal place to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch.
When it comes to having that picnic, locations in South Yarra are endless. Try Fawkner Park, which is 41 hectares of established parklands. There are plenty of picnic benches and an electric barbecue.
Another popular picnic area is Herring Island, which sits admid the waters of the Yarra River. Only accessible by boat, this 3 hectare reserve has a beautiful sculpture park.
Back on the 'hinterland', the Jam Factory is a well known building in South Yarra. Originally built as a brewery, it later became a preserving company, before becoming the vibrant shopping centre it is today. Having been established as a retail centre in 1979, the Jam Factory houses a cinema, cafes and restaurants and fashion stores.
South Yarra really is home to a bit of everything. Major parklands retain the leafy feel of the suburb, while the range of restaurants, clubs and bars ensure it has a raging nightlife as well. If you're lucky, you might even spot some home-grown celebrities.
