>> An Introduction To Kensington
Located in south-eastern Sydney, Kensington was originally designed to be the equivalent of its distinguished London namesake. Today the leafy suburb is dominated by the University of New South Wales, historic architecture and beautiful parklands.
The University of New South Wales is one of Australia's top rated universities, and worth strolling through for its manicured grounds and peaceful atmosphere. Kensington is also home to the renowned National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). This is the exclusive training ground for Australian actors, directors and production assistants, with Mel Gibson and Cate Blanchett among its graduates.
Kensington's student community has strongly influenced the suburb's commercial district, with its large shopping strip boasting an eclectic mixture of cafes, restaurants and shops.
Kensington is also home to the Australian Golf Club. This course is extremely exclusive and only available to members and their guests. Originally constructed in 1905, the present course bears little resemblance to its predecessor, and was redesigned in 1977 by the great Jack Nicklaus.
Sacred Heart Monasteries sits atop the hill that dominates West Kensington. It is the home of the Catholic Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. The historic building dates back to 1895, and features a large tower that can be seen from all over the surrounding area.
Nearby is Royal Randwick Racecourse - the main horse racing establishment in New South Wales. Experience racing at its best during the Autumn Carnival, as people, punters, bookies and jockeys flock to the field. Get amongst the action, have a bet, or just admire the fashions.
To relax and escape the city for a while, head to the nearby Centennial Parklands. These parklands were officially opened in 1888 and are spread across 189 stunning hectares. The park is decorated in traditional Victorian style with formal gardnes, ponds, statues, grand avenues and historic buildings scattered throughout. Spread a rug and enjoy a picnic on its grassed areas.
Visit Kensington and explore its rich history and diverse cultural mix.
