Visit Ultimo
With an edgy industrial heritage, period architecture, cool cafes and a diverse multicultural community, Ultimo is evolving as one of Sydney's most interesting new quarters.
The streets of Ultimo are rich in character and history, and feature some of the oldest Victorian terraced houses in Australia. Once home to a sandstone quarry and power station, Ultimo now features major education institutions, TV and radio studios, parks and museums. Old factories, woolstores and warehouses now contain stylish apartments, restaurants and bars. Take a historical walking tour and explore the area's industrial and maritime past, stopping off at the Australian Maritime Museum.
Australia's largest and most diverse museum, the Powerhouse Museum, is one of Ultimo's major attractions. Explore the quirky, interactive exhibitions showcasing all kinds of technology, from decorative arts and steam engines to science, communication and space technology. View the dynamic collection of paintings, sculptures, photographs, digital media and graphic design at the University of Technology Sydney Gallery. Or visit the studios of the Australian Broadcasting Corportation, where you can go behind the scenes, or join the studio audience for one of the TV shows.
Browse small local shops on Harris and Wattle Streets, or head to Haymarket or Broadway Shopping Centre for some serious retail therapy. Neighbouring Glebe features a wide range of eclectic shops and excellent markets. When it comes to food, you can't go past the Sydney Fish Markets at Pyrmont. Buy seafood, tackle, fruit and vegetables, deli goods and flowers, and snack on fresh oysters, sushi or fish and chips. There's even a seafood cooking school where you can learn how to prepare your seafood to perfection.
Ultimo also features plenty of chic cafes and restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world. Enjoy a casual or elegant meal before hitting one of the trendy bars. Just up the road, Star City Casino offers a vast hub of dining, entertainment and nightlife.
Beside the Sydney Fish Markets and Blackwattle Bay, Wentworth Park is a vital green space featuring sports fields and a children's playground. Watch a rugby or soccer match, or place a bet on the greyhounds. Have a family picnic or barbecue in Fig Lane Park beside the fountain, or relax in the gardens of Tumbalong Park, where you might also catch a live performance or festival activities.
Well served by public transport and close to Haymarket, Darling Harbour and the Sydney CBD, Ultimo offers an almost endless choice of things to do.
