Visit the establishment that is The Breakfast Creek Hotel, Brisbane's most famous watering hole. Constructed in French Renaissance style, the hotel was built in 1889 by the former Lord Mayor of Brisbane, William MacNaughton Galloway, whose initials remain on the front facade.
Galloway remained at the hotel until his death in 1895 when he fell, drunk, out of a second storey window. Legend has it that his ghost still haunts the establishment.
In 1992 the historic building was entered into the Queensland Heritage Register. It remains one of the very few pubs in Australia to still serve beer 'off the wood' or out of wooden kegs; most others have moved to the more modern steel kegs.
Don't leave without trying one of the hotel's famous steaks. The 'Breakky Creek Experience' involves selecting your own superbly tender, aged fillet from the chilled cabinet and having it char grilled in front of you, in the open kitchen. The steaks are served with an Idaho potato, bacon sauce, coleslaw, slices of tomato and a bread roll - the perfect beer accompaniment.
