Darwin Aboriginal History

Darwin’s Aboriginal History dates back over 40,000 years, and is a region deep in cultural history with the largest centralised collection of Aboriginal rock art in the world.

The monsoonal forests, desert sands, and rock formations that comprise the landscape are core to the Aboriginal Culture, with approximately half of the Northern Territory being Aboriginal land.

The indigenous people believe their purpose of existence is to be the custodians of the land. Dreamtime stories, songs, dance and art are used tell their story and have been passed on through the generations.

The Northern Territory has an Indigenous population of 32.5%, many of whom still live semi-traditional lives. About 40 different Aboriginal languages are used today, with over 250 languages being originally spoken.
