Gold Coast Arts and Culture
Australia’s Gold Coast is renowned for its sparkling beaches and sunny skies while the magnificent arts and culture of this beautifully diverse tourist city is often overlooked. The original indigenous people of the Gold Coast region included the Kombumerri, Minjungbal and Yugambeh tribes, who settled in what they referred to as ‘Kurrungal’ for its endless supply of timber, abundant wildlife and fresh water sources. Experience the exciting history and culture of the Gold Coast’s aboriginal heritage by visiting some of its local museums, art galleries and historical sites.
Burleigh Heads National Park—The headland area at Burleigh was formed as the result of a volcanic eruption millions of years ago. The Aborigines in the area referred to the layer of black basalt that formed once the lava flow cooled as Big Burleigh. The area still carries spiritual significance to the local indigenous people.
Tweed Heads Historical Site—This park, also referred to as “Minjungbal,” celebrates the original Minjungbal tribe of the area. It is comprised of a museum, art gallery, office, shop, refreshment kiosk and a small amphitheater. You may also enjoy the picnic area, walking track, and mangrove boardwalk.
Tamborine Mountain Heritage Centre—Extensive displays explore the aboriginal and geological history of the Gold Coast. Here, one can visit everyday life in the first part of the 18th century by touring through the general store, slab cottage, barber and dairy shop or the blacksmith’s area.
Yugambeh Museum—Learn about the history of the Yugambeh tribe with an extensive display of more than 15,000 artifacts collected from the region that was inhabited by these extraordinary aboriginal people. Explore the archives section and library of the museum or visit the gift shop for a souvenir.
Gold Coast City Art Gallery—The gallery promotes and encourages the visual arts in the Gold Coast area with events and exhibitions on national, international and a local scale, offering both historical and contemporary collections
Watling Galleries—Enjoy extraordinary collections of aboriginal works, traditional and contemporary artwork and a beautiful display of sculpture and pottery, all created by both international and local artists
