Although Cairns doesn't have a beach, it boasts a beautiful Esplanade. Opened in 2003, the Esplanade has become the meeting place for everyone, where locals and visitors enjoy a tropical lifestyle. Swim in a saltwater lagoon surrounded by grassy picnic areas and walking tracks. Facilities also include an outdoor amphitheatre, children's playground, barbecue, restaurants, shops, an environmental interpretation centre, and a Great Barrier Reef cruise departure terminal.
Pool wheelchair to use in lagoon pool is available (at no cost) – just ask patrolling lifesavers. A liberty swing for children in wheelchairs is available too.
